KAMPALA, Uganda — Award-winning Danish environmental journalist, explorer and filmmaker Klaus Thymann has been arrested in Kampala in a development that has attracted attention from international media and conservation circles.
According to security sources, Thymann was taken into custody on Tuesday while following up on official clearance related to his conservation work in Uganda. He is currently being held at Kira Road Police Station and may later be transferred to Kasese District, where the matter under investigation reportedly originated.
Authorities had not, by Tuesday evening, issued an official statement detailing the allegations against the journalist or confirming any charges.
Preliminary reports indicate that the case may be linked to wildlife conservation and activities within protected areas, although the exact circumstances surrounding his arrest remain unclear.
Thymann is internationally recognised for his environmental reporting and scientific expeditions documenting the effects of climate change. His work on the rapidly disappearing glaciers of the Rwenzori Mountains has drawn global attention to the impact of global warming on one of Africa’s few remaining tropical glacier systems.
Over the years, he has collaborated with scientists, conservation organisations and academic institutions on projects focusing on biodiversity, climate change and environmental protection across Africa.
