Rabat, Morocco – The 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations got off to a thrilling start on Tuesday as several favourites stamped their authority in opening-day matches. Tunisia, Nigeria, Senegal, and DR Congo all secured victories, while Uganda and Botswana suffered defeats in their respective Group C and D encounters.
Tunisia 3–1 Uganda
Tunisia began their campaign with a commanding 3–1 victory over Uganda at the Annexe Olympic Stadium in Rabat. Elyes Skhiri opened the scoring in the 10th minute, followed by Elias Achouri’s first-half strike. Achouri completed his brace in the 64th minute, effectively sealing the win before Denis Omedi scored a consolation goal for Uganda in stoppage time.
Uganda coach Paul Put lamented the team’s lack of aggression, saying, “We showed them too much respect… We only had about 25 minutes of the game, but the rest, we were on the back foot.” Tunisia coach Sami Trabelsi praised his squad’s efficiency and the welcoming atmosphere provided by Moroccan fans despite heavy rain.
Nigeria 2–1 Tanzania
Nigeria edged Tanzania in a pulsating Group D clash, with Semi Ajayi scoring the opener in the 36th minute. Tanzania equalised through Charles M’Mbowa in the 50th minute, but Ademola Lookman quickly restored the lead with a sublime strike, giving the Super Eagles a hard-fought victory.
Nigeria coach Eric Chelle said, “The second part of the game shows clearly that there is still work to be done, especially in killing games.”
Senegal 3–0 Botswana
Senegal made a statement in Tangier, defeating Botswana 3–0. Nicolas Jackson scored twice, in the 40th and 58th minutes, while substitute Cherif Ndiaye added a late third goal.
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw highlighted the team’s discipline and professionalism, whereas Botswana coach Morena Ramorewboli acknowledged the challenge posed by Senegal’s pace and experience.
DR Congo 1–0 Benin
In Rabat, DR Congo claimed a narrow 1–0 victory over Benin thanks to Théo Bongonda’s 16th-minute strike. Despite Benin’s efforts, DR Congo’s disciplined defence held firm. Bongonda said, “It was a difficult match… but the most important thing is to take the three points and keep moving forward.”
Tuesday’s opening fixtures set the tone for an exciting AFCON tournament, with favourites demonstrating quality and discipline, while underdogs face the challenge of bouncing back in their upcoming games.
