GLASGOW, Scotland — Uganda’s Husnah Kukundakwe has etched her name into the country’s sporting history after winning silver in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke SB8 final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Kukundakwe delivered a remarkable performance in the para swimming event to secure Uganda’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in swimming, marking a breakthrough moment for the country’s aquatic sports.
The Ugandan swimmer battled against a strong field to finish second in the final, earning a place on the podium and adding another major achievement to her growing international career.
Her silver medal has been celebrated as a landmark achievement for Uganda, highlighting the progress of para sport and the increasing visibility of athletes competing at the highest level.
The performance adds to Kukundakwe’s reputation as one of Uganda’s most successful young para athletes. She has previously represented the country at major international competitions, including the Paralympic Games, where she became one of Uganda’s youngest-ever Paralympians.
Her achievement in Glasgow drew praise from Ugandan sports fans and officials, who hailed her determination, resilience and commitment to representing the country on the global stage.
Kukundakwe’s medal came as part of a strong showing by Team Uganda at the Commonwealth Games, with athletes competing across swimming, athletics and netball.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s women’s 5,000m runners also produced impressive performances, with Esther Chebet recording a personal best of 14:50.70 to finish fourth, Joy Cheptoyek posting a season-best 15:00.97 for 10th place, and Rebecca Chelangat achieving a personal best of 15:07.20 to finish 12th.
In netball, the She Cranes concluded their campaign with a 65-56 victory over hosts Scotland to finish third in Pool B after a spirited tournament that included wins over Wales, Trinidad and Tobago and Scotland.
Kukundakwe’s silver medal, however, stood out as one of Uganda’s defining moments at Glasgow 2026, opening a new chapter for the country’s participation in swimming at the Commonwealth Games.
