KAMPALA — Police in Old Kampala have recovered an AK-47 rifle at Tausi Bus Terminal in Bukesa Parish, Kampala Central Division, following a suspicious incident involving an unidentified passenger.

According to a press release issued by Racheal Kawala, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 14, 2026, at around 5:00 a.m.

It is alleged that a bus conductor, while loading passengers onto a vehicle bound for Mbarara, was approached by an unknown man who requested to have his luggage transported. As part of routine checks, the conductor asked the passenger to open the bag for inspection, but the request was declined.

The refusal raised suspicion, prompting the conductor to manually inspect the luggage. During the check, he reportedly felt an object resembling a firearm and immediately alerted authorities.

A police task team responded swiftly to the scene and, upon inspection, recovered an AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine and no ammunition. The weapon had been concealed inside a white polythene bag, which was further packed in a larger bag locally known as an “usofia.”

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Police say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend him as investigations continue.

Authorities have commended the vigilance of the conductor and urged the public, particularly transport operators, to remain alert and report any suspicious items or individuals to security agencies.
