KAMPALA – Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe has adjourned the mandatory bail application for lawyer and activist Male Mabirizi to July 10, 2026, after the prosecution requested additional time to respond to the application.

Mabirizi, who appeared in court on Friday, applied for release under mandatory bail provisions, arguing that he has spent an extended period on remand while his case remains pending.

The defence told court that Mabirizi is entitled to release in line with statutory requirements governing time spent on remand without trial.

However, Chief Magistrate Neumbe declined to make an immediate ruling, noting that the prosecution must first be given adequate opportunity to present its response before the court can determine the application.

The prosecution informed court that it required more time to prepare and file its submissions, a request that was granted, leading to the adjournment.

As a result, Mabirizi remains in custody until the next hearing date, when both the defence and prosecution are expected to make full arguments on whether he qualifies for mandatory bail.

Mabirizi, a controversial lawyer known for his frequent constitutional challenges against government institutions and public officials, has remained a prominent figure in Uganda’s legal and political discourse over the years, often drawing public attention through high-profile court battles.
