The Uganda Police Force has dismissed allegations that a supporter attached to the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential campaign was shot by security operatives in Sironko District, describing the claims as false and unsupported by medical evidence.

According to a statement issued by the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, SP Rogers Taitika, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, January 4, 2026, in Buchibindi village, Budadiri Town Council.

Police said the incident involved a Toyota Wish, registration number UBM 430K, driven by Lubulwa Hamza, who was travelling along the route of the NUP presidential candidate’s campaign convoy.

“While driving recklessly, the driver overtook the candidate’s convoy, refused to stop when flagged down by the security detail, and nearly knocked the security vehicle,” SP Taitika said.

Police stated that the driver’s actions prompted a pursuit and eventual interception. Upon being stopped, Lubulwa allegedly resisted lawful arrest. In the scuffle that followed, he sustained a head injury and was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

“Allegations that he was shot are false and not supported by clinical evidence,” the police spokesperson emphasized.

Earlier, videos circulating on social media showed police officers evacuating Lubulwa—identified by some sources as Dr Hamuza Lubulwa, a medic attached to NUP presidential candidate Mr Robert Kyagulanyi’s campaign—to hospital. The footage fueled claims that he had been injured by security operatives as the candidate made his way to a campaign venue in Budadiri East.

Police maintain that the injury resulted from resistance during arrest and not from gunfire, adding that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
