BULAMBULI, UGANDA – The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has halted large-scale wetland degradation in Bulambuli District following an enforcement operation targeting illegal activities within the Ngenge–Atari–Sipi Sironko Wetland System.

In a statement released on April 21, 2026, the National Environment Management Authority said the operation targeted activities by Great River Technologies Limited, which is accused of carrying out unlawful agricultural and environmental alterations in the protected ecosystem.

Illegal Farming and River Diversion

According to NEMA, investigations revealed extensive illegal rice and chilli cultivation within the wetland, alongside the excavation of more than 15 kilometres of diversion channels.

Authorities also reported the illegal diversion of River Sironko, an action that significantly altered natural water flow and contributed to the degradation of approximately 2,000 acres of wetland.

Officials described the activities as a serious violation of environmental protection laws, given the ecological importance of the wetland system in supporting biodiversity, water regulation, and community livelihoods.

Arrests and Equipment Seizure

During the enforcement operation, the director of Great River Technologies Limited was arrested, while tractors and excavators allegedly used in the illegal activities were impounded by authorities.

NEMA said the arrests are part of ongoing investigations aimed at holding those responsible accountable for environmental destruction.

Restoration and Compliance Measures

The authority has since ordered the restoration of the degraded wetland, including closure of illegal drainage channels and rehabilitation of affected areas.

NEMA also emphasised that the company must comply with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) requirements before undertaking any activities in sensitive ecosystems.

The regulator further announced strengthened monitoring measures to prevent further encroachment and ensure long-term protection of the wetland system.

Environmental Protection Efforts

Wetlands in Uganda are protected under national environmental laws due to their critical role in flood control, climate regulation, and supporting agriculture and fisheries.

Officials reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illegal wetland use, warning that offenders will face prosecution and enforcement action.

The operation in Bulambuli is part of wider national efforts to restore degraded ecosystems and safeguard natural resources for future generations.
