Police have charged a man accused of impersonating a State House official and using forged documents to solicit money from senior government officials.
The suspect, identified as Babibaasa Frankline, allegedly used the name Usiga Stanley and claimed to work with the State House Presidential Private Secretary’s (PPS) office.
According to police, Babibaasa allegedly sent forged documents to government officials through WhatsApp, claiming that several senior officials had been shortlisted for appointments to positions in government institutions.
Police said the suspect, in some cases, demanded money from the officials to facilitate the purported appointments.
In another incident under investigation, the suspect allegedly sent forged documents to government officials claiming that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had directed investigations into alleged misconduct.
He allegedly demanded money to resolve the purported investigations.
Police arrested Babibaasa and conducted investigations that included recording statements from victims and witnesses and recovering the alleged forged documents.
Investigators also obtained court orders authorising forensic examination of mobile phones recovered from the suspect.
The case file was subsequently submitted for legal guidance, following which charges of making a false document and uttering a false document were sanctioned.
Babibaasa is scheduled to appear before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court for arraignment.
Police have invited members of the media to attend and cover the court proceedings.
Investigations into the matter are continuing.
