Kampala, Uganda – A 64-year-old Canadian citizen, Michel Faille, has been remanded to Luzira Prison after being charged over an alleged gold scam involving about $1.5 million (approximately Shs5.5 billion).

Faille appeared before Kampala Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa on Friday, where court ordered that he remains in custody until August 12, 2026, as investigations into the matter continue.

Prosecution alleges that Faille was involved in a fraudulent arrangement in which victims were allegedly deceived into releasing money in connection with gold transactions.

The case comes amid increased attention on Uganda’s gold sector, with authorities warning against fraudulent schemes involving precious minerals and international transactions.

The accused is expected back in court on August 12 for further mention of the case. He remains presumed innocent until a final determination is made by court.
