Kampala — Police have recovered more than Shs54 million and arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged theft of Shs200 million from a home in Lugazi.
The operation was conducted by officers attached to Yesu Amala Police Station in Nansana following intelligence information that two individuals were carrying a bag containing a large amount of money around Nansana Heights Building in Ochieng One Zone.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said officers intercepted the suspects and recovered Shs35.61 million from their possession.
Investigators later traced the money to Ramathan Kafeero, who was arrested at Standard Rose Site Guest House in Nansana.
Police allege that Kafeero stole Shs200 million from his grandmother in Lugazi, where a theft case had already been registered.
A search of his room reportedly led to the recovery of an additional Shs18.9 million, four smartphones, a laptop and household items believed to have been purchased using the stolen money.
Police said Kafeero allegedly revealed that he had taken Shs100 million to a traditional healer identified as Ssalongo Kato Nsobya in Kavumba, Wakiso District, seeking to have the money ritually “cleansed.”
Police subsequently arrested Nsobya and searched his residence, recovering Shs120,000 and a goat allegedly purchased for the ritual.
However, investigators said the alleged Shs100 million was not recovered.
Owoyesigyire said all recovered money and exhibits had been secured as evidence and would be transferred to Lugazi Police Station, where investigations are ongoing.
The four suspects remain in custody as detectives continue efforts to recover the remaining funds and establish whether other individuals were involved.
