NWOYA DISTRICT — Four people have been confirmed dead following a fatal road crash involving a Nile Star bus in northern Uganda, renewing concerns over the safety of long-distance passenger transport.
According to Michael Kananura, the victims died on the spot after the bus was involved in the accident along a major highway in Nwoya District.
Several other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
“The driver was arrested and is currently in custody to assist with ongoing investigations,” Kananura said, adding that inquiries are underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Preliminary findings point to possible speeding or loss of control, though authorities are also examining the mechanical condition of the vehicle and the driver’s condition at the time of the accident.
Eyewitnesses and survivors recounted moments of panic as the bus reportedly veered off the road before the fatal impact. Police, local leaders, and residents responded quickly, rescuing the injured and retrieving the bodies of the deceased.
The incident has once again drawn attention to persistent safety gaps within Uganda’s public transport system, particularly among commercial bus operators.
Concerns have long been raised about weak enforcement of regulations, including driver fatigue, reckless driving, and inadequate vehicle inspections.
A local road safety advocate familiar with campaigns in the region warned that such tragedies remain preventable.
“We need stricter enforcement and accountability. Without it, these accidents will continue to happen,” the official said.
Police have since urged transport companies to ensure compliance with safety standards, including proper driver training and adequate rest before long journeys.
Passengers have also been encouraged to report reckless driving and demand safer travel conditions.
Authorities say a comprehensive investigation report will be released, with findings expected to guide possible legal action and broader road safety reforms.
The Nwoya crash adds to a growing list of fatal road incidents, underscoring the urgent need for stronger safeguards to protect lives on Uganda’s highways.
