Five police officers have been arrested and are under investigation following a raid at the Bank of Uganda headquarters in Kampala, where laptops containing sensitive commercial data were reportedly stolen.
According to security sources, the officers were picked up as part of ongoing investigations into the incident at the central bank, with their personal devices now undergoing forensic examination.
Preliminary reports indicate that the stolen laptops contained commercial and financial data used for internal analysis and monitoring of economic activity.
“The stolen laptops contained commercial data, and the officers’ devices are now being examined by forensic analysts,” a security source familiar with the investigation said.
The arrests come amid a wider probe into the breach at the Bank of Uganda, which was detected earlier this week and has triggered joint investigations by multiple security agencies.
Reports indicate that investigators are also analysing digital trails, communication records, and electronic devices belonging to suspects in an effort to establish how the breach was executed and whether there was any internal collusion.
According to earlier media reports, the incident involved the theft of several laptops from the central bank’s commercial offices, prompting a coordinated security operation in Kampala that led to multiple arrests in downtown areas.
The Bank of Uganda confirmed that it is working closely with security agencies and that the matter remains under active investigation, while assuring the public that core banking operations have not been affected.
Authorities have not yet issued a detailed public statement linking the arrested officers directly to the break-in, as inquiries continue.
Investigations are ongoing.
