Authorities in northern Uganda have arrested a doctor accused of operating an illegal surgical facility from his residence in Kitgum Municipality.

The suspect, Paul Pope Okwera, is reportedly attached to Kitgum General Hospital.

According to investigators, the doctor is alleged to have converted part of his home into a makeshift operating theatre where he carried out surgical procedures on patients.

The arrest was conducted by a joint team comprising the Uganda Police Force and the State House Health Monitoring Unit, which has been carrying out inspections of health facilities across the country.

Officials said the operation followed complaints from residents who suspected that medical procedures were being performed at the doctor’s residence.

During the raid, authorities reportedly recovered medical equipment believed to have been used in the procedures. Investigators also noted that the premises lacked proper infection control systems and did not meet the required standards for a surgical facility.

Police further said some patients were allegedly charged up to Shs150,000 for treatment and operations conducted at the residence.

Health experts warn that surgeries carried out in unregulated environments can expose patients to serious infections, complications, and potentially life-threatening risks.

The suspect is currently in police custody as investigators prepare possible charges related to illegal medical practice and professional negligence.
