James Cameron’s highly anticipated third instalment in the Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is scheduled for a wide release on December 19, 2025, by 20th Century Studios, following a string of nine delays as the production team refined the script, pre-production, and visual effects.

Picking up after the events of Avatar: The Way of Water, the story follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as they navigate the aftermath of their son Neteyam’s death amidst a world of escalating conflict. The film introduces a new volcanic biome on Pandora and two new Na’vi tribes:

The Ash People (Mangkwan or Fire People) – a fierce and aggressive tribe led by the fiery warrior Varang (Oona Chaplin), representing a darker side of the Na’vi.

The Wind Traders – a peaceful, seafaring tribe that travels in ships with jellyfish-like sails.

Returning cast members include Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, Kate Winslet as Ronal, and Cliff Curtis as Tonowari.

With a reported budget exceeding $400 million, Avatar: Fire and Ash runs approximately 3 hours and 17 minutes. Filming for this and part of the fourth instalment occurred simultaneously with The Way of Water, ensuring continuity and an immersive visual experience. Sequels 4 and 5 are already planned for December 2029 and December 2031, respectively.

The film has already had its world premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on December 1, followed by a China premiere at the Hainan Island International Film Festival on December 8, attended by Cameron and the cast. Today, December 13, the Australasian premiere is being held at Wellington’s Embassy Theatre, featuring a red carpet event with the cast in attendance.

Global release dates are as follows: New Zealand: December 18, 2025 and Uthe nited States and worldwide: December 19, 2025.

Fans can check local showtimes and book tickets through platforms like Fandango or enjoy an enhanced experience at IMAX.
