UWA arrests man with 15kg of Pangolin scales

KIRYANDONGO — In a significant move to combat wildlife trafficking, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), in collaboration with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has arrested a 36-year-old man found in possession of 14.5 kilograms of illegal pangolin scales.

The suspect, identified as Okech Philip Jonathan, was apprehended on March 22 at around 10:30 a.m. at a UPDF checkpoint in Karuma, Kiryandongo District. He was reportedly traveling on a motorcycle taxi (bodaboda) to Karuma Centre, where he intended to sell the scales.

Concealment and attempted sale

Authorities said the pangolin scales were hidden in a yellow sack inside a bag. During questioning, Okech admitted that he had traveled from Kampala via a Gateway bus to Lamdin with the intention of completing the transaction there. He later redirected to Karuma after learning that the buyer was staying in a guest room in the town.

“This arrest underscores our ongoing commitment to tackling illegal wildlife trade, particularly the trafficking of pangolins, which are among the most endangered species globally,” UWA said in a statement.

Enforcement and ongoing investigations

The arrest is part of a broader crackdown by UWA and security agencies to prevent poaching and illicit trade in endangered species. Investigations into the case are ongoing, and authorities have promised to pursue all individuals involved in wildlife crimes to ensure justice is served.

Officials reiterated the critical importance of protecting Uganda’s biodiversity, warning that illegal trade in wildlife products carries severe legal consequences.
