Security agencies have assured the public that the security situation in the Kampala Metropolitan Area remains stable ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Thursday, January 22, 2026.
According to the police, elections will be held for the positions of Lord Mayor, Lord Councillors, and District Chairperson, prompting heightened security operations and joint deployments across the metropolitan area to ensure a peaceful voting process.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachel K. Kawala said security forces are fully prepared to safeguard citizens before, during, and after the elections.
“The priority of the security forces remains the protection of life and property, the maintenance of law and order, and the overall preservation of peace,” Kawala said, adding that adequate measures have been put in place to prevent disruptions at polling stations.
She noted that joint security teams are already deployed across key locations within the metropolitan area to deter any acts of violence or disorder that could undermine the electoral process.
Security agencies also issued a stern warning to individuals or groups planning to engage in violence, intimidation, or other unlawful acts, stressing that such actions will not be tolerated.
“Individuals planning to cause disruptions, violence, or engage in any unlawful acts are strongly warned to desist,” the statement said.
The police have called on members of the public to remain calm, peaceful, and cooperative throughout the election period, emphasizing that public cooperation is essential to maintaining stability and ensuring a credible electoral exercise.
Authorities say they will continue to monitor the situation closely and respond swiftly to any incidents that may arise as Kampala goes to the polls.
