The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has commenced patrols in Kampala ahead of voting day, stating that the deployment is intended to ensure public safety during the election period.
According to the Acting Defence Public Information Officer, Col. Chris Magezi, the military is working jointly with the police to prevent violence and protect lives and property, amid heightened political tensions.
“UPDF patrols in Kampala have commenced. There is no cause for alarm. However, we do not take threats of violence during the election period by some political actors and their supporters lightly,” Col. Magezi said.
He explained that the deployment is part of the UPDF’s constitutional mandate to safeguard national security, noting that threats to stability can arise from within the country, not only from external forces.
“Threats may not emanate externally only. When threats emanate internally, the UPDF is mandated to come and protect Uganda’s sovereignty,” he said.
Col. Magezi added that elections often generate tension, making it necessary for the army to reassure citizens of their safety as the country heads to the polls.
“The election period has also been characterised by tension. It’s therefore in order for us to come out and reassure every citizen that they will be safe,” he noted.
He emphasised that the UPDF remains committed to acting within the law, warning that any acts of criminality or threats to public order will be handled promptly and legally.
“Public and private property will be kept safe and secure. Cases of criminality or threats to public order will be dealt with promptly and in compliance with the laws of Uganda,” Col. Magezi said.
Beyond security, the UPDF spokesperson also highlighted the army’s role in national development, citing initiatives such as the Engineering Brigade, the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), and Operation Wealth Creation.
“UPDF is required to be productive and contribute to development. That’s why we have a very robust engineering brigade and the NEC, not forgetting Operation Wealth Creation,” he added.
The military deployment comes before Ugandans head to the polls, with authorities urging calm, vigilance, and peaceful participation in the electoral process.
