SOROTI, Uganda — At least 16 people were injured after a Kakise bus overturned in Opiro, near the Television Centre in Soroti City, late Saturday night following a road traffic crash.
According to the Uganda Red Cross Society, the accident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on July 18 and involved a Kakise bus that was travelling from Soroti to Kampala.
Preliminary information indicates that the driver reportedly lost control of the bus after knocking a boda boda rider, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The Uganda Red Cross Society said its Emergency Response Team, working alongside the Ministry of Health and the Uganda Police Force, responded to the scene and coordinated the evacuation of the injured.
“A road traffic accident involved a Kakise bus traveling from Soroti to Kampala. The driver reportedly lost control after knocking a boda boda cyclist, causing the bus to overturn,” the Red Cross said in a statement posted on X.
The organisation said 16 casualties were recorded and all were transported to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Authorities had not immediately released the identities of those injured or confirmed whether there were any fatalities.
Initial reports circulating on social media suggested the bus was carrying about 24 passengers at the time of the crash, although officials had not independently verified the passenger manifest by press time.
Police had also not yet issued an official statement detailing the cause of the crash, and investigations into the incident were ongoing.
The latest accident comes amid growing concern over road safety in Uganda following a series of fatal crashes reported across the country in recent weeks. Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid reckless driving and ensure vehicles are mechanically sound before undertaking long-distance journeys.
Emergency responders appealed to motorists to exercise caution, particularly during night travel when visibility is reduced and the risk of serious crashes increases.
