KAMPALA — The High Court in Kampala has sentenced two men to 40 years in prison each for the 2019 murder of a boda boda rider in Mengo, a case in which the victim’s killing was captured on CCTV.
High Court Judge Alex Ajiji sentenced Aloysius Tamale alias Young Mulo and John Bosco Mugisha after finding them guilty of murdering the rider and stealing his motorcycle.
The court heard that the pair attacked and strangled the boda boda rider in Mengo before taking his motorcycle.
The killing was captured on CCTV footage, which formed part of the evidence used in the prosecution of the two men.
Tamale, while pleading for leniency before sentencing, reportedly told court that he still hoped to become President of Uganda.
The two convicts are also members of the Kabadia group, which has been linked to a series of attacks and killings targeting boda boda riders in Kampala.
The 40-year sentences will run consecutively with an earlier 70-year sentence imposed on the two men in connection with another case.
Taking into account the time they have already spent on remand, the latest ruling leaves them with approximately 33 years remaining in prison.
The case relates to a series of attacks on boda boda riders that caused public concern in Kampala several years ago, with security agencies subsequently intensifying investigations and operations against groups suspected of targeting motorcycle taxi operators.
The latest sentence brings another of the cases against members of the Kabadia group to a conclusion, while highlighting the serious consequences for organised attacks involving robbery and murder.
