Uncle Mo’s skit lands surprise Al Jazeera shoutout

Ugandan comedian Moses Kiboneka, popularly known as Uncle Mo, has received an unexpected international spotlight after one of his comedy skits was referenced in an Al Jazeera segment about deportation agreements and the challenges faced by deportees returning to Africa.

Kiboneka reacted with surprise after discovering that his skit had been mentioned by the international broadcaster.

“When your skit is referenced on Al Jazeera out of the blue. I can’t be calm,” Uncle Mo posted on X.

The skit focuses on Ugandans deported from the United States and the cultural shock they may experience when they return home.

In his characteristic comedic style, Uncle Mo jokes about the contrast between life in the United States and the realities awaiting some deportees in Uganda. He also pokes fun at how even modest financial support from the United States could dramatically change someone’s social standing back home — potentially turning a returnee into a motivational speaker.

The reference by Al Jazeera quickly attracted attention among Ugandan social media users, with journalist Canary Mugume among those celebrating the comedian’s international recognition.

The moment has also highlighted the growing ability of Ugandan digital creators to push locally produced stories and humour beyond the country’s borders.

Uncle Mo began producing his comedy skits during the COVID-19 pandemic, initially using his garage as a production space. The simple setup eventually became part of his identity as he built an audience through social media.

His comedy often draws from ordinary Ugandan experiences, relationships, social expectations and the contradictions between life at home and abroad.

The Al Jazeera mention offers another example of how social media has altered the traditional route to international visibility. A comedian no longer necessarily needs a television deal, a major production company or an established international audience before their work can travel.

Sometimes a phone, a garage and an idea are enough.

For Uncle Mo, a joke made for Ugandan audiences has now found its way onto one of the world’s major news networks — a reminder that in the digital age, the distance between a Kampala garage and a global newsroom can be surprisingly short.
