A sales team belonging to Kombucha Products Ltd was robbed of Shs5.51 million and other valuables by armed men dressed in army and Uganda Revenue Authority (URA)-like uniforms along the Iganga-Kaliro road on Thursday.
The incident occurred as the team returned to Iganga after conducting sales in the area.
According to Twinamastiko, the team had collected Shs5.51 million from sales during the day before the attackers intercepted their vehicle.
He said two men wearing what appeared to be URA reflector jackets first stopped the vehicle and asked Waiswa, one of the team members, to produce his driving permit and trading licence.
Twinamastiko said Waiswa explained that the trading licence had been left pinned at their manager’s office and attempted to contact his supervisor to have it produced.
However, before the matter could be resolved, three other men dressed in army-like uniforms surrounded the vehicle and declared the occupants under arrest.
The attackers allegedly proceeded to rob the sales team of the money and other valuables before leaving the scene.
The use of uniforms resembling those of security and government agencies has raised concern over the impersonation of authorities by criminal gangs operating along major roads.
Police had not yet issued a statement on the incident or confirmed whether any suspects had been arrested by the time of publication.
