She Cranes bow to South African Queens

Lilongwe, Malawi — Uganda’s She Cranes fell short in the 2025 Africa Netball Cup final, bowing to a dominant South African Queens side to finish as runners-up in the continental tournament.

South Africa showcased a commanding performance from start to finish, defending their crown in style. “Relentless, composed, and full of confidence — a true championship display,” the Netball Association of Malawi said, celebrating the Queens’ decisive victory over Uganda.

Despite the loss, Uganda’s team had reasons to celebrate. Wasswa Disam was named Player of the Match after a standout performance in the final, highlighting her skill and resilience on the court.

The She Cranes took to social media to express gratitude to the tournament hosts and supporters: “We made it second in the Africa Cup. Merry Christmas, everyone and a happy New Year! Thank you, Malawi Netball, for such a wonderful netball experience.”

The 2025 Africa Netball Cup, hosted in Lilongwe, also saw South Africa’s men claim the championship with a 40-29 win over Zimbabwe, reinforcing the nation’s dominance in African netball.

Meanwhile, Malawi narrowly missed out on third place in the women’s tournament, losing 44-48 to Zimbabwe. “It was a close game… we will come back stronger!!” the Malawi Netball Association said.

While the She Cranes fell just short of the top prize, their silver-medal finish underscores the team’s growing stature in African netball and sets the stage for an even stronger campaign in future competitions.
