HOIMA, Uganda — Police in Hoima District are searching for a driver who allegedly attempted to run over a police officer after law enforcement officers interrupted him while he was reportedly having sex with a married woman inside a vehicle concealed in bushes on the outskirts of Hoima City.

The incident occurred on the night of July 5, 2026, at around 11:00 p.m. in Kijungu Isaka Cell, Central Ward, Hoima East Division, according to a police report seen by local media.

Police said they acted on intelligence from an informant who reported that a white Toyota Wish had been suspiciously parked in bushes near the main gate of a secondary school. The informant allegedly observed a woman entering the vehicle, prompting suspicion that the occupants were engaged in sexual activity.

A rapid response team comprising four armed officers on two police motorcycles was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers reportedly found the Toyota Wish hidden in the bushes. Preliminary investigations indicated that the driver and a woman were inside the vehicle.

According to the police report, officers ordered the suspect to open the vehicle doors. Instead, the man allegedly climbed into the driver’s seat, started the engine and sped off in an apparent attempt to escape.

During the escape, the vehicle allegedly knocked down Police Constable Julius Twongo, who was thrown onto the bonnet as the driver accelerated. The officer later managed to jump off but sustained injuries. Police have since classified the incident as an attempted murder of a police officer.

As the suspect fled, Police Constable Christopher Mwebaza reportedly fired three rounds at the vehicle’s tyres in an effort to stop it. Despite the gunfire, the driver continued fleeing the scene.

Police said the suspect later dropped off the woman before abandoning the Toyota Wish along the Hoima–Karyabwire Road in Kijungu Cell. Officers recovered the vehicle, which was found locked with both the front and rear tyres punctured by gunfire. The car was towed to Hoima Central Police Station as evidence.

The woman, identified by police as Norah Namutebi, 29, a resident of Kijungu Isaka Cell, was arrested to assist with investigations. Investigators allege she had met the suspect while her husband was away at work.

Police have opened a case of attempted murder against the fugitive driver under reference 02/06/07/26 and say efforts to trace and arrest him are ongoing. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity.

The incident has drawn attention because of the alleged use of force during the suspect’s escape and the ensuing attempted murder investigation, with police expected to continue forensic examinations of the abandoned vehicle as part of the inquiry.
