An accountant at National Teacher’s College (NTC) Kaliro has been remanded to Luzira Prison after appearing before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of causing financial loss amounting to Shs121 million to the Government of Uganda.
Mr. Okiria Clement Epalat, 55, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Esther Asiimwe on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of causing financial loss. The court remanded him until August 12, 2026, when the case will return for mention and hearing of his bail application.
According to the Inspectorate of Government (IGG), Okiria is jointly charged with Ms. Lanyero Evelyn Grace, the Principal of NTC Kaliro, with abuse of office and causing financial loss of Shs121 million to the government. Both officials are currently on interdiction.
The prosecution alleges that the offences resulted in a loss of Shs121 million in public funds, although details of how the alleged financial loss occurred were not disclosed during Tuesday’s court session.
Ms. Lanyero first appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court last year, when she was remanded before subsequently being granted bail.
The IGG said Okiria had been on the run since the case was first instituted last year until his arrest on July 31, 2026.
The Anti-Corruption Court has scheduled a pre-trial hearing for September 10, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
The prosecution was led by Mr. William Moses Ntumwa, Principal Inspectorate Officer at the Inspectorate of Government.
The Inspectorate of Government has continued to intensify efforts to investigate and prosecute corruption-related offences as part of broader measures to safeguard public resources and promote accountability in public institutions.
