Uganda’s Deogracius Musobo announced himself on the international road-running circuit on Saturday after winning the Bilbao Night Half Marathon in Spain in a course-record time of 1:00:34 on his debut over the distance.
Musobo crossed the finish line 11 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Evans Kipkorir, who clocked 1:00:45, while Ethiopia’s Alemayehu Mulate Teshager finished third in 1:00:47.
The Ugandan’s time broke the previous course record of 1:00:37 set by Kenya’s Peter Mwaniki in 2023, according to Spanish media reports.
The result also marked a personal best for Musobo, who entered the competition with a 10-kilometre personal best of 27:59, according to the Spanish athletics federation’s pre-race information.
Uganda Athletics Track & Field celebrated the victory in a social media post, congratulating Musobo for winning the race on his debut and setting both a course record and a personal best.
The Bilbao Night Running Fest, held on October 17, attracted more than 27,000 runners across the half marathon and 10-kilometre races, according to reports from the event.
In the women’s half marathon, Ethiopia’s Diniya Kedir Abaraya won in 1:09:16, finishing ahead of Kenya’s Sharon Jerono, who recorded 1:10:04, and compatriot Winsam Jerono, who came third in 1:10:13.
Musobo’s victory adds another international road-racing result for Uganda, a country whose athletes compete across track and long-distance road events.
