The High Court in Kampala has begun hearing the defence of Molly Katanga, widow and prime suspect in the killing of businessman Henry Katanga, in a case that has drawn widespread public attention.

Katanga, who appeared in court in person for the first time since her arrest, is jointly charged alongside her daughters, Martha Nkwanzi and Patricia Kakwanzi, as well as former shamba boy George Amanyire and nursing officer Charles Otai.

Taking the stand before the High Court of Uganda, Katanga described a troubled end to what she said had been a 35-year marriage. She told court that tensions escalated due to financial strain linked to an unpaid debt of Shs1.5 billion allegedly owed to her late husband by a client.

In emotional testimony, Katanga recounted events of November 2, 2023, claiming that her husband turned violent during a domestic altercation. She alleged that he assaulted her, dragged her, and later declared he intended to take his own life. Moments later, she told court, a gunshot was heard.

Katanga denied any involvement in the shooting and insisted she has no knowledge of how to operate a firearm.

As part of her defence, she presented visible scars on her head and body, which she said were sustained during the alleged assault. She also spoke of lasting injuries, including broken hands and the loss of a finger, which she attributed to the incident.

The prosecution maintains that Katanga and her co-accused are responsible for the death of Henry Katanga, a prominent businessman, in a case that has sparked intense public debate over its circumstances.

Proceedings are ongoing, with the court expected to hear further testimony from the defence in the coming days as it seeks to challenge the prosecution’s account of events.
