KAMPALA — Ugandan para swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe has made history after winning a silver medal in the women’s SB8 100-metre breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games, securing Uganda’s first medal of the Glasgow 2026 Games.
Kukundakwe touched the wall in 1:26.20, improving on her morning qualifying time of 1:27.38, to finish second behind England’s Brock Whiston, who claimed gold in a Commonwealth Games record time of 1:22.05. England’s Iona Winnifrith took bronze.
Earlier in the day, Kukundakwe had booked her place in the final after producing an impressive swim of 1:27.38 in the heats, continuing her remarkable rise as one of Africa’s leading para swimmers.
The Uganda Olympic Committee, alongside the Uganda Swimming Federation, celebrated the achievement, describing it as Uganda’s first medal of the Glasgow Games.
“A remarkable performance from Husnah Kukundakwe as she qualifies for the 100m Breaststroke Final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Husnah booked her place in the final with a time of 1:27.38, continuing to make history for Team Uganda,” the Uganda Olympic Committee said after the heats.
Following the final, the committee announced: “Husnah Kukundakwe has secured Uganda’s first medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a brilliant performance in the SB8 Women’s 100m Breaststroke, finishing in 1:26.20.”
The silver medal represents several milestones for Uganda. According to Glasgow 2026 organizers, it is Uganda’s first-ever Commonwealth Games swimming medal, the country’s first medal in a Para sport at the Commonwealth Games, and its first Commonwealth Games medal outside athletics or boxing.
Kukundakwe, who has represented Uganda at both the Paralympic Games and World Para Swimming Championships, has become one of the country’s most accomplished para-athletes despite still being in her teens. Her latest achievement further cements her status as a trailblazer for disability sport in Uganda.
Uganda’s medal provides an early boost to Team Uganda’s campaign in Glasgow as the country continues its quest for more podium finishes across athletics, boxing, swimming and other disciplines during the Games.
