Fuel pump prices fluctuate across Kampala

KAMPALA, Uganda — Fuel pump prices continue to fluctuate across different stations in Kampala, with motorists facing significant variations depending on location and brand.

At Petrocity Ntinda, a popular refuelling point for taxis and commuter vehicles, petrol is currently being sold at UGX 7,000 per litre, while diesel is priced at UGX 5,500 per litre.

The pricing gap reflects a broader trend across the city, where fuel costs differ sharply from one station to another despite operating within the same urban market.

Recent market checks show that petrol prices in Kampala generally range between about UGX 5,200 and UGX 5,600 per litre, with diesel averaging between UGX 5,000 and UGX 5,500 depending on the station and supplier.

Industry analysts attribute the variations to differences in distribution costs, branding, stock timing, and location-based operational expenses, which often influence final pump prices even within short distances of each other.

Smaller or independently operated stations tend to show wider price spreads compared to major branded outlets, which usually maintain more uniform pricing bands.

Fuel pricing in Uganda has remained sensitive to global oil market movements and import costs, as the country relies heavily on imported petroleum products routed through regional supply corridors.

Despite government assurances of stable supply, motorists continue to feel the impact of frequent price adjustments at the pump, particularly in high-traffic urban centres like Kampala.

As demand remains steady, analysts expect continued variability in pump prices unless more uniform pricing mechanisms or stronger regulatory interventions are introduced across the retail fuel market.
