The call was made by Fr Lukyamuzi during a requiem Mass held in Wakiso District, where family members, friends, colleagues and members of the public gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of the late journalist.

Sseruwooza, a Parliament reporter and political talk show host at BBS Terefayina, was widely known for his coverage of parliamentary affairs, governance issues and national politics. Throughout his career, he became a familiar figure in Uganda’s political reporting landscape, earning respect for his dedication to informing the public on matters of national importance.

Journalism Rooted in Truth

Delivering his homily, Fr Lukyamuzi praised Sseruwooza’s commitment to public service through journalism and reminded media practitioners of the vital role they play in shaping public opinion and strengthening democracy.

He said the late journalist’s life should serve as a reflection on the responsibility that comes with gathering, verifying and disseminating information to the public.

“The truth must remain at the center of journalism. Without integrity, the media loses its purpose,” Fr Lukyamuzi said.

The priest cautioned journalists against practices that undermine public trust, including misinformation, sensationalism and biased reporting. He noted that while the media industry continues to face intense competition and changing technologies, ethical standards should never be sacrificed in pursuit of audience numbers or influence.

He urged media professionals to remain guided by conscience, fairness and a commitment to the public good.

Colleagues Remember a Dedicated Professional

Tributes from fellow journalists painted a picture of a hardworking and passionate reporter who devoted much of his career to covering politics and holding leaders accountable through informed reporting.

Colleagues recalled Sseruwooza’s extensive work at Parliament, where he regularly engaged legislators and interpreted complex policy debates for ordinary Ugandans.

Many described him as approachable, supportive and willing to mentor younger journalists entering the profession.

“He was always ready to share knowledge and guide upcoming reporters,” one colleague said. “His contribution to political journalism will not be forgotten.”

Friends and associates also remembered him for his calm demeanor, professionalism and commitment to factual reporting, qualities they said earned him respect across political and media circles.

Reflecting on Challenges Facing the Media

The funeral service also became an opportunity for reflection on the broader challenges confronting Uganda’s media industry.

Speakers highlighted concerns including job insecurity, growing political pressures, shrinking newsroom resources and the rapid spread of unverified information through social media platforms.

Several mourners emphasized the need for stronger editorial standards, continuous professional development and greater support for journalists to help preserve public confidence in the profession.

They argued that maintaining credibility in journalism has become increasingly important at a time when misinformation and digital content are reshaping how citizens consume news.

Final Farewell

The Mass concluded with prayers for the eternal repose of Sseruwooza’s soul and messages of comfort to his family, friends and colleagues.

Mourners later accompanied the late journalist to his final resting place, where emotional tributes and prayers marked the end of a career dedicated to public-interest journalism.

As Uganda’s media fraternity continues to mourn his passing, Joseph Sseruwooza is being remembered as a committed political reporter, mentor and broadcaster whose work helped bring parliamentary proceedings and national debates closer to the public.

His legacy, colleagues say, will endure through the many journalists he inspired and the countless Ugandans he informed during his years in the profession.
