KAMPALA — Uganda’s military has unveiled a towering new flagpole at the under-construction Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) and Joint UPDF Services Headquarters in Kampala, with officials describing it as the tallest flagpole in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The claim was made by UPDF spokesperson Col. Chris Magezi, who shared drone footage of the structure on social media, showcasing the giant mast rising above the new military complex.
“The tallest flag pole in sub-Saharan Africa at the new MODVA and Joint UPDF Services Headquarters. Soon it will be adorned with the largest flag,” Col. Magezi posted on X.
While military officials have not publicly disclosed the exact height of the flagpole, the structure has already generated significant public attention, with supporters describing it as a symbol of national pride and military modernisation.
The flagpole forms part of the new Ministry of Defence and Joint Services Headquarters project, a major infrastructure development intended to centralise military command and administrative functions. Construction of the facility began earlier this year following a groundbreaking ceremony officiated by Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
According to information released during the launch of the project, the headquarters complex is expected to cost approximately $25 million and will house key departments of the Ministry of Defence and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
The unveiling of the giant flagpole has sparked mixed reactions online. Supporters have praised the project as a landmark national symbol and a reflection of Uganda’s growing infrastructure ambitions. Others have questioned the prioritisation of such investments at a time when the country continues to face challenges in areas such as healthcare, education and public service delivery.
The military has not responded directly to criticism surrounding the project, but officials have previously argued that modern defence infrastructure is necessary to support operational effectiveness and institutional development.
The new headquarters complex is one of several ongoing military infrastructure projects being undertaken by the UPDF as part of broader efforts to modernise defence facilities across the country.
Once completed and fitted with the national flag, the structure is expected to become one of Kampala’s most visible landmarks and a prominent feature of the new defence headquarters.
