Kampala — The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities Uganda has officially launched the Explore Ankole Caravan and the Mbarara City Marathon 2026, a campaign aimed at promoting domestic tourism and showcasing the cultural and natural attractions of western Uganda.

The initiative was unveiled on March 10 at Fairway Hotel Kampala, bringing together tourism officials, influencers, and partners in the sector.

Officials said the campaign seeks to encourage Ugandans and international visitors to explore the Ankole sub-region through a blend of cultural experiences, wildlife tourism, and sports.

The Explore Ankole Caravan will run from March 26 to March 29, featuring guided tours to some of the region’s most notable attractions.

Among the highlights are visits to the historic Mugaba Palace, the reopening of the restored heritage site, and excursions to Lake Mburo National Park, known for its zebras and diverse wildlife.

Participants will also experience the culture of Ankole at Nshenyi Cultural Village and visit agro-tourism sites such as the Lato Milk Factory to learn about the region’s thriving dairy industry.

Tourism officials said the caravan is designed to highlight the heritage of the Bahima community and the natural beauty that has earned the region the nickname “the land of milk and honey.”

The activities will culminate in the Mbarara City Marathon, scheduled for March 28 in Mbarara City.

The marathon will start at 6:00 a.m. at Mugaba Palace and take runners through the rolling hills and scenic landscapes of the city.
Organisers said the event will feature several race categories, including a full marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km), 10 km race, and a 5 km fun run aimed at encouraging broad community participation.

Officials from the tourism ministry noted that the initiative forms part of efforts to diversify Uganda’s tourism offerings and encourage more Ugandans to travel within the country.
They added that combining sports, culture, and travel experiences provides a platform to promote regional destinations while stimulating local economies.

The four-day campaign is expected to conclude with an “Explore Uganda” concert on March 29, bringing together visitors, athletes and local communities to celebrate the culture and tourism potential of western Uganda.
