KAMPALA – Uganda has introduced a new annual observance set for December 5 aimed at promoting youth entrepreneurship, digital skills development, and innovation across the country.
The initiative, which will not be a public holiday, is intended to spotlight the growing role of young people in shaping Uganda’s economic future, particularly in sectors such as technology, media, and small business development.
According to organisers, the observance will provide a coordinated platform for training, dialogue, and youth-led engagement activities designed to strengthen practical skills and encourage self-employment.
The initiative is being positioned as a response to persistent youth unemployment challenges and the need to align education and training with the demands of a rapidly evolving digital economy.
“This is about creating a space where young people can showcase ideas, build capacity, and connect to opportunities,” said a Kampala-based youth policy analyst, noting that structured platforms often help convert innovation into viable enterprise.
Planned activities for the first edition in 2026 include digital skills workshops, entrepreneurship forums, and discussions focused on innovation, leadership, and civic participation. A national youth entrepreneurship summit is also expected to be held in Kampala, bringing together emerging founders, investors, and development partners.
In addition, organisers say recognition awards will be introduced to celebrate outstanding young Ugandans in areas such as technology innovation, business development, and community impact.
The observance is also expected to encourage collaboration between youth organisations, the private sector, and development agencies in a bid to strengthen support systems for young entrepreneurs.
While still in its early rollout phase, the December 5 observance—also referred to by organisers as Nyanzi Martin Luther Day—is being framed as a long-term platform to deepen youth participation in Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
