Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, on Saturday met U.S. Congressman Gregory Meeks in Washington, D.C., in talks centred on democratic governance and accountability.
Kyagulanyi, who leads the National Unity Platform (NUP), described the meeting as productive, highlighting what he called a shared commitment to advancing democratic principles and upholding human rights.
Meeks, a senior member of the U.S. Congress and ranking figure on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has been involved in U.S. policy discussions on governance and international relations, including engagement with African political developments.
The meeting comes in the aftermath of Uganda’s January 15, 2026 presidential election, in which incumbent Yoweri Museveni was declared winner with 61 percent of the vote. Kyagulanyi rejected the results, alleging widespread electoral fraud and irregularities.
Tensions escalated shortly after the election when security forces reportedly raided Kyagulanyi’s residence. According to accounts from his supporters, the opposition leader fled the country the following day with assistance from elements within the security forces. His wife was reportedly assaulted during the incident, further fueling criticism from human rights advocates.
Since leaving Uganda, Kyagulanyi has been engaging international actors, including lawmakers and advocacy groups, in what his supporters describe as a diplomatic campaign to draw attention to governance and human rights concerns in Uganda.
Reactions to the Washington meeting have been mixed. Supporters have welcomed the engagement as a strategic effort to build international pressure on the Ugandan government, while critics have dismissed it as symbolic, questioning whether foreign outreach should take precedence over organising domestically.
The development underscores the continuing political tensions following the disputed election, as Uganda’s opposition seeks both local and international avenues to challenge the status quo.
