The African Union (AU) witnessed and welcomed a significant step towards lasting peace in Ethiopia with the signing of a sustainable peace agreement between the Amhara National Regional State and the Amhara FANO Popular Organisation (FANO-AFPO).

The signing ceremony, held in Addis Ababa, was attended by H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, who represented the continental body, and Mr Mohamed Abdi Ware, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

In her statement at the event, the Deputy Chairperson commended the parties for their commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution. She emphasised that this agreement represents a crucial milestone not only for Ethiopia but for the entire African continent.

“Each peace agreement inches us closer to achieving our goal of Silencing the Guns in Africa,” stated H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi. “On behalf of the African Union, I congratulate the parties for reaching this important milestone. This achievement demonstrates the power of African-led solutions to African challenges”.

The African Union reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting the implementation of this agreement and the broader peace in Ethiopia.
