The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has commended the conduct of Uganda’s 2026 general elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election.

In a statement issued following the announcement of the final results, Youssouf praised Uganda’s electoral process and confirmed that Museveni had secured victory with 71.65 per cent of the votes cast in the presidential election held on January 15, 2026.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission commends the conduct of the elections in the Republic of Uganda and congratulates H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election with 71.65 per cent of the votes cast,” the statement said.

According to the Electoral Commission, President Museveni polled 7,946,722 votes out of a total of 11,662,201 votes cast nationwide, securing another term in office.

Youssouf also expressed appreciation to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for leading the Joint African Union–COMESA–IGAD Election Observation Mission to Uganda.

“The Chairperson expresses his sincere appreciation to H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for his sterling leadership of the Joint African Union, COMESA and IGAD Election Observation Mission to Uganda,” he said.

The AU Commission Chair further reaffirmed the African Union’s broader commitment to democratic governance across the continent.

“He reiterates the commitment of the African Union Commission to continue supporting the promotion of democracy and effective governance on the continent,” the statement added.

Youssouf also applauded Ugandans for their participation in the electoral process, describing it as a contribution to national stability and progress.

“The Chairperson applauds the people of Uganda for their commitment to consolidating democratic gains, as well as promoting peace, security and development,” he said.

President Museveni’s re-election extends his decades-long leadership of Uganda, following an election period that attracted significant regional and international attention through observer missions and diplomatic statements.
