Celebrating 17 Years of Equity in Uganda
During the awards ceremony, Equity Bank Uganda MD Gift Shoko reflected on the bank’s growth since opening its first branch in 2008. “Today, Equity boasts 50 branches, over 9,000 Duuka agents, 2,000 merchants, and a digital ecosystem serving 2.2 million customers.”

Shoko emphasised the bank’s commitment to financial inclusion through innovations like agency banking, USSD account opening, and digital onboarding, noting that over 80% of transactions now occur outside branches.
Empowering Communities and Youth
Shoko highlighted Equity’s transformative programs: 160,000+ young entrepreneurs trained, 200,000 youth jobs created, and UGX 125 billion disbursed in affordable financing. “Through the Equity Group Foundation, initiatives in education, agriculture, and environmental conservation continue to benefit thousands across Uganda.”
Supporting Namulonge Golf and the Community
Shoko praised the Equity NARO Golf Open as a key event in Uganda’s golfing calendar and reaffirmed support for expanding the Namulonge Golf Course from 9 to 18 holes, a milestone set to elevate the club’s status. He thanked partners, staff, customers, regulators, and the golfing community for their support over the past 17 years.
The day also celebrated standout performers, including Equity staffer Afurah Arinda, who finished 2nd runner-up in Group B Ladies with 30 points. The tournament concluded with vintage fashion, classical music, and networking, setting the stage for an even bigger event in 2026.
