URA World Cup tax post stirs anger amid MPs’ luxurious lifestyles

A social media post by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) encouraging Ugandans to pay taxes in order to enable Uganda to host the FIFA World Cup has triggered widespread online backlash, with critics linking the message to concerns over government spending and parliamentary privileges.

In a post shared on its official X account on Thursday, URA said: “Uganda could host the world cup if we all pay our taxes today. Do it now. #URATicktock #ITCanGetBetter,” alongside an image of the FIFA World Cup trophy.

The message quickly attracted more than 299 replies, with a significant number of users criticizing what they described as a disconnect between tax messaging and public expenditure priorities.

Several online commentators referenced recent controversies surrounding luxury government spending, including claims about high-value vehicle imports for senior officials and MPs.

Some users cited reports involving Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, alleging the acquisition of a luxury vehicle reportedly valued at around USD 900,000 under tax arrangements, while others pointed to Parliament’s approval of vehicles for 529 Members of Parliament.

Although these claims circulated widely online, they were largely presented as part of public debate and not independently verified within the comment threads.

Critics argued that such expenditures undermine public confidence in tax compliance campaigns, with many questioning how increased tax collection would be managed if current spending patterns persist.

“People pay taxes but we see priorities elsewhere,” one user commented, reflecting a broader sentiment echoed across multiple replies.

However, a smaller group of users supported URA’s message, saying increased tax compliance remains essential for national development, including infrastructure expansion and international sporting ambitions.

URA has in recent years intensified public campaigns aimed at broadening the tax base and improving compliance, often linking tax revenue to national development goals such as industrialization and global competitiveness.

The latest online debate highlights ongoing tensions between revenue mobilization efforts and public concerns over government expenditure, accountability, and service delivery priorities.
