KAMPALA — It was a night of high-octane glamour, diplomats, and red-carpet sizzle as the Mestil Hotel played host to the national premiere of Back to the Source – The Nile.
The documentary—already a certified sensation with over 73 million views in China—brought out the heavyweights of Uganda’s creative and political spheres. From the presence of Gen. Salim Saleh to the sharpest tourism minds like Amos Wekesa, the evening wasn’t just about film; it was about a nation reclaiming its narrative through the lens of its most iconic landmark.

The “Juju” Magic: From Guangzhou to Kampala
Executive produced by Juju Nsababera (Uganda’s Consul General in Guangzhou) and directed by Derrick Ssenyonyi, the film is being hailed as a strategic masterpiece in “soft power” diplomacy. By blending heart-pounding Nile rafting with sweeping, cinematic visuals of the river’s communities, the project has successfully positioned Uganda as a “must-visit” destination for the massive Chinese market.

Red Carpet Sizzle & Big Stakes
Hosted by the charismatic Zakia Lucky, the red carpet was a masterclass in Ugandan fashion and influence. Beyond the flashbulbs, however, the message was clear: Uganda is open for business.
“This is the kind of content that tells our story authentically and positions Uganda competitively on the global tourism map,” Amos Wekesa noted, emphasising that the film is a vital tool for diversifying Uganda’s international visitor base.

Backed by the Uganda Tourism Board, Back to the Source is more than a documentary; it’s a high-performance engine for tourism revenue, proving that when Uganda tells its own story, the world doesn’t just watch—it books a flight.
Social media posts from attendees captured the glamour of the evening, from red-carpet fashion to behind-the-scenes moments with the cast and production team. Media personality Zakia Lucky, who hosted the red carpet, shared highlights of the night, while other guests praised the production’s storytelling and cinematography.

The premiere comes at a time when Uganda is intensifying efforts to grow tourism revenues and diversify its international visitor base. Industry players say productions like Back to the Source – The Nile could play a key role in attracting new audiences by leveraging digital platforms and cross-cultural storytelling.
As the film prepares for wider distribution, stakeholders remain optimistic that its success abroad will translate into increased tourist interest and investment back home.
