LIRA CITY — The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has intensified enforcement against noise pollution, impounding sound equipment from a popular entertainment venue in Lira City over repeated violations of environmental standards.
In a statement, NEMA said it carried out the operation on Wednesday, April 15, targeting Legacy Lounge after the establishment failed to comply with earlier directives.
“NEMA has impounded sound equipment and opened a police case against Legacy Lounge following continued violations of environmental noise standards,” the authority said.
Ignored compliance notice
According to NEMA, the enforcement action followed an Improvement Notice issued in September 2025 requiring the facility to either soundproof its premises or reduce noise levels to acceptable standards.
“The promoters of Legacy Lounge ignored the Improvement Notice, and non-compliance was confirmed, leading to the seizure of sound equipment,” the statement noted.
Authorities said a police case has since been opened under SD reference 71/12/2025 as part of ongoing enforcement.
Legal action underway
NEMA indicated that the operators of the establishment will face prosecution under the National Environment (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, as well as relevant city ordinances governing noise pollution.
“The promoters of the facility will be brought to book under the applicable environmental laws and city regulations,” NEMA said.
Growing crackdown on urban noise
The move is part of a broader campaign by the regulator to address rising noise pollution in urban centres, particularly from bars, nightclubs, and entertainment venues.
Officials say enforcement will continue across the country to ensure compliance and protect public health, as excessive noise has been linked to stress, sleep disruption, and other health concerns.
Residents in Lira City have previously raised complaints about noise from entertainment spots, prompting authorities to step up monitoring and enforcement.
