Suspect in Ggaba Daycare killings remanded

Kampala — Okello Christopher Onyum, the prime suspect in the gruesome attack on a daycare centre in Ggaba that left four children dead, has been arraigned before Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court to face murder charges.

The 39-year-old was on Tuesday brought to court under heavy security, marking a key step in the prosecution of one of the most shocking crimes in recent years.

According to court and police sources, Onyum is accused of attacking children at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program on April 2, 2026, killing four toddlers in an incident that has since sparked national outrage.

Police say the suspect had earlier posed as a parent seeking admission for a child before carrying out the attack.

“The suspect had visited the school earlier and returned on the material day, where he gained access before committing the crime,” a police source said, adding that investigations into the motive are still ongoing.

The victims, all pupils at the daycare, were identified as children aged between two and three years. Authorities confirmed that the suspect was arrested at the scene and saved from an angry mob by security officers.

State prosecutors told court that inquiries are still underway and requested more time to complete investigations.

“This is a serious matter involving the loss of young lives. Investigations are ongoing and we pray for more time to conclude them,” a state attorney submitted.

The court remanded Onyum to custody pending further mention of the case.

The tragic incident led to the closure of the daycare centre by the Ministry of Education, as parents and the public continue to demand swift justice for the victims.

Outside court, emotions remained high, with some members of the public calling for expedited proceedings.

“We want justice for our children. This case should be handled with urgency,” one concerned resident said.

The case has drawn widespread attention across the country, raising concerns over safety in early childhood learning centres and prompting calls for tighter security and regulation.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring accountability. “The Uganda Police Force assures the public that all efforts are being made to ensure justice for the victims,” police said in an earlier statement.

The matter is expected to return to court as investigations progress.
