KAMPALA — The Ugandan creative industry is in shock following the death of Esteri Tebandeke, a “bright, fearless creative” who passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026.
Known for her depth and heart, Tebandeke left an indelible mark on African cinema through her roles in the Disney hit “Queen of Katwe”, “Imperial Blue”, and “Little Black Dress”.
Tebandeke’s journey was one of immense resilience. After being diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, she underwent a transplant in 2022 with a kidney donated by her husband, filmmaker Samuel Lutaaya Tebandeke.
Despite the successful surgery and support from the community—including financial intervention from the President’s office—she faced a prolonged battle as her body later began to reject the organ.
She breathed her last at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. Beyond her acting, she was the founder of the Binti Film Festival, a platform dedicated to empowering female filmmakers.
A fundraiser is currently underway to clear a hospital bill of Shs 20.2 million. She will be laid to rest in Kampala on Friday, March 27, 2026.
