Security forces in Uganda have withdrawn from the residence of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, ending a two-month deployment at his home in Magere, Wakiso District.
The joint operation by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and police began on January 15, 2026, immediately after the country’s disputed presidential election, in which President Yoweri Museveni was declared winner with more than 70% of the vote.
According to local media, armed personnel vacated the premises on Monday, March 23, bringing an end to what had effectively become a prolonged siege of the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader’s home.
Post-election crackdown
The deployment followed a tense election period marked by allegations of fraud, violence, and widespread repression of opposition figures. Kyagulanyi rejected the official results, describing them as fraudulent, while authorities denied the claims.
Shortly after the polls, security forces raided his Magere residence, with Kyagulanyi alleging that soldiers cut power, damaged property, and injured his wife during the operation.
He subsequently went into hiding for weeks before leaving Uganda earlier this month for what he described as “critical engagements” abroad, amid continued security pressure.
Mixed reactions
Police have previously defended the deployment, saying it was intended to maintain order and protect the property from potential looting. However, opposition supporters and rights groups have criticised the move as illegal and politically motivated.
Supporters welcomed the withdrawal of troops this week but expressed concerns about possible tampering with the property during the siege. Some have called for an independent investigation and compensation for damages allegedly incurred during the operation.
The end of the standoff comes amid ongoing political tensions in Uganda, where protests and arrests have continued in the aftermath of the January election.
