Simba, Muzito named athletes of the year

Uganda’s top athletes and sports organisations were recognised during the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) 2025 Awards held at Mestil Hotel & Residences during the UOC/Commonwealth Games Uganda Annual General Meeting.

Athletics star Samuel Cherop Simba was named Male Athlete of the Year, while swimmer Anna Gloria Muzito won the Female Athlete of the Year award after securing two gold medals and one silver at the Islamic Solidarity Games.

The Uganda Cubs (U-17 national football team) were named Male Team of the Year following their participation in the FIFA U‑17 World Cup, marking Uganda’s first appearance at the tournament.

Netball giants Uganda She Cranes won Female Team of the Year after emerging champions at the Celtic Netball Cup.

Veteran sports administrator Sheila R Agonzibwa received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to handball development in Uganda, while Uganda Rugby Union was named Federation of the Year.

During the assembly, the Olympic body also celebrated Uganda’s achievements in 2025, including 24 medals in international competitions, athlete scholarships, and recognition from the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa for sustainability and gender equality initiatives.
