EUGENE, USA — Uganda’s rising distance running star Charity Cherop has claimed gold in the women’s 5,000 metres at the 21st World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, marking a major milestone in her young career and Uganda’s athletics history.
The 19-year-old produced a commanding performance at Hayward Field, crossing the finish line in 15:03.88 to win Uganda’s first gold medal at the championship since Joshua Cheptegei’s triumph in the men’s 10,000 metres in 2014.
Cherop, who won silver at the previous edition of the championships two years ago, upgraded her medal to gold after a closely contested race against Ethiopia’s Shito Gumi and Kenya’s Joyline Chepkemoi.
Gumi finished second in 15:07.91, while Chepkemoi completed the podium in 15:09.08, setting a personal best.
Uganda Athletics celebrated the victory, describing Cherop’s performance as a landmark achievement for the country.
“Gold for Uganda. Charity Cherop put up a stellar performance, winning the women’s 5000m at the World Athletics U20 Championships in 15:03.88,” Uganda Athletics said.
“She upgrades from the silver two years ago to gold.”
The victory makes Cherop the fifth Ugandan athlete to win gold at the World Athletics U20 Championships and the first Ugandan woman to achieve the feat.
Her triumph also places her among a select group of Ugandan athletes who have conquered the junior world stage, following in the footsteps of Cheptegei and other celebrated distance runners who have carried Uganda’s flag at global competitions.
Cherop’s journey to the title has been marked by steady progress. After settling for silver at the previous championships, the young athlete returned to Eugene with greater experience and determination, eventually converting her previous podium finish into championship gold.
The victory reinforces Uganda’s strength in long-distance running, a discipline where the country has produced world champions and Olympic medalists including Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Peruth Chemutai.
Cherop’s success also highlights the continued emergence of young talent within Uganda’s athletics programme as the country looks to build the next generation of international champions.
Her gold medal at Hayward Field adds another memorable chapter to Uganda’s athletics story at a venue where Cheptegei also secured his junior world title more than a decade ago.
With the victory, Cherop has announced herself as one of Uganda’s brightest prospects in distance running and a potential future contender on the global athletics stage.
