Dodoma — President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan has officially inaugurated the country’s first permanent National Defence Headquarters in Dodoma, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s defence infrastructure development. The facility was opened on 24 February 2026 and represents a major step forward in centralising Tanzania’s defence operations.
The new headquarters brings together the Ministry of Defence, National Service, and Army Headquarters under one roof for the first time since the establishment of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force in 1964. The expansive complex — fully funded by the Tanzanian government — cost around TSh318 billion (about USD 124 million) and was built largely using local military engineering expertise.
Speaking at the unveiling in the Kikombo area of Dodoma, President Samia described the headquarters as a “symbol of national maturity and self-reliance,” reflecting Tanzania’s ability to undertake significant strategic projects using its own financial resources and local expertise. She urged defence institutions to use the modern facility as a hub for strategic planning, professional analysis, and effective management of national security operations.
The headquarters is expected to enhance coordination and efficiency across Tanzania’s defence institutions, streamlining operations that were previously spread across temporary offices since the relocation of government functions to Dodoma. The project’s completion underscores the government’s long-term vision to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges.
General Jacob John Mkunda, Chief of Defence Forces, also praised the facility as a major milestone toward reinforcing national security, thanking service members and government stakeholders for their role in completing the project and reaffirming its importance for future defence coordination.
Future phases of the development are expected to include additional infrastructure such as staff housing and expanded administrative facilities, further consolidating Tanzania’s defence capabilities in the heart of its capital.
The opening of the Defence Headquarters represents a key achievement for Tanzania’s military modernisation and is seen by analysts as enhancing the nation’s strategic readiness in a dynamic regional environment.
