Mayiga: rename national team ‘Spears’, drop docile ‘Cranes’

Uganda’s National Football Team may have exited AFCON 2025 at the group stage, but Kabaka’s Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, says the problem isn’t talent—it’s inspiration.

Mayiga took to Twitter on January 9 to propose bold changes to lift the Cranes’ identity and morale:

Rename the team “Spears”: Move away from the “docile” Cranes to a name that screams courage and victory.

Adopt national colours: Establish a look rooted in Uganda’s football heritage, not sponsor branding.

Give the team an anthem: A song fans can chant to rally the squad.

End parastatal clubs in the league: Government-backed teams like UPDF, Police, and URA should sponsor community clubs instead to build stronger fan bases and a more competitive league.

A public debate on his proposals showed mixed opinions: 52% favored keeping the name “Cranes,” while 32% backed “Spears.” Only 22% supported adopting specific team colours. 48% want a team anthem. 46% agreed parastatal clubs should exit the league.

Mayiga says he plans to engage FUFA officially on these ideas, driven by his passion “for the love of the beautiful game.”

The conversation has sparked wider discussions in Uganda about how identity, culture, and fan engagement could shape the Cranes’ future on the continental stage.
