Fort Portal — The Uganda Police Force has dismissed claims of an attempted kidnapping made by James Byamukama, a candidate for the Mwenge South Constituency parliamentary seat.

According to the police, Byamukama alleged that he narrowly escaped an abduction by unidentified individuals dressed in civilian clothes while at a hotel in Fort Portal, where he had a reservation.

However, investigations by the Rwenzori West Territorial Police revealed that the vehicle reportedly following Byamukama was operated by a staff member of Prime Financial Services, who was also staying at the same hotel. The police confirmed there is no evidence to support the alleged kidnapping claims.

“The Territorial Police in the Rwenzori West Region wish to dismiss false claims of an attempted kidnapping,” the Uganda Police tweeted. They cautioned political actors against using dramatic political stunts that could incite fear or panic among the public.

Observers say the statement comes amid heightened political activity ahead of Uganda’s 2026 elections, highlighting concerns over misinformation and the need for responsible conduct by candidates.
