National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, held two campaign rallies in Lubaga North and South today amid reports of violent clashes with security forces.
The first rally took place at Wankulukuku Stadium in Lubaga South, where Bobi Wine was greeted by enthusiastic supporters. According to NUP’s official Twitter account, the atmosphere was “electric” as citizens gathered to hear the opposition leader speak.
Shortly after, Bobi Wine addressed supporters at Namungoona Playground in Lubaga North for the final rally of his campaign in the area.
He claimed that peaceful citizens accompanying him were subjected to brutal treatment by police en route to the venue. “Our journey to this venue has been mired by violent scuffles with police brutally knocking down peaceful citizens who were accompanying us to the rally,” Bobi Wine said.
Meanwhile, concerns about the treatment of opposition supporters continue to mount. Reports have emerged of Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Ssekabira being detained by the military, despite initial claims by police that his whereabouts were unknown.
Activists allege that many supporters abducted during campaign activities are held at military barracks and secret detention facilities, including Kasenyi and Mbuya.
“This, after our Kenyan brothers confirmed they were being held incommunicado at Kasenyi military barracks,” one social media user wrote, highlighting growing concerns over human rights violations.
Bobi Wine and the NUP have consistently called for greater freedom and safety for citizens participating in political activities, citing repeated incidents of abduction and harassment by security forces.
