Bushenyi — Police have arrested the driver of a passenger vehicle accused of carrying passengers beyond the permitted capacity and failing to stop after being flagged down by traffic officers along the Mbarara–Bushenyi Road.
According to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, the incident occurred on Monday, July 13, 2026, at around 10:45 a.m. after a passenger travelling in the vehicle alerted the Police Command Centre that the taxi was overloaded.
The vehicle, registration number UBR 062M, was reportedly travelling along the Mbarara–Bushenyi Road when traffic officers were notified and positioned at Nyarutobo to intercept it.
“Traffic officers on duty were immediately notified and attempted to stop the vehicle at Nyarutobo along the Mbarara–Bushenyi Road. However, the driver ignored the lawful instructions and sped off,” Kananura said in a statement.
Police officers coordinated with colleagues further ahead, leading to the vehicle’s interception in Sheema District, where it was impounded.
The driver was arrested and is currently being held at Bushenyi Central Police Station (CPS) on charges of carrying passengers in excess of the permitted capacity and failing to stop when directed by a police officer in uniform. He is expected to be arraigned in court.
Police warned motorists against traffic violations that endanger the lives of passengers and other road users, saying strict enforcement operations will continue across the country.
The force also commended the passenger who reported the incident, describing the action as a demonstration of public responsibility that helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation.
“We encourage members of the public to continue reporting dangerous road user behaviour so that timely action can be taken,” Kananura said.
The Uganda Police Force has in recent months intensified operations against reckless driving, overloading and other traffic offences as part of efforts to reduce road crashes and improve safety on the country’s highways.
