KAMPALA — Police have arrested Asiimwe Christian, also known as Don Chris, a former director of the defunct labour recruitment company Sky Pins, over allegations of obtaining money by false pretences and fraudulent labour recruitment.
Asiimwe was arrested at about 2am on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at a bar in Zana, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Police said the suspect is accused of obtaining money from several people between 2022 and 2025 by falsely claiming that he could secure them employment opportunities abroad.
The alleged destinations included Canada, the United Kingdom, Qatar and Dubai, among others, while the jobs reportedly promised included positions as waiters, cleaners and caregivers.
“So far, statements have been recorded from over 500 alleged victims in connection with the matter,” said Sp Kawala Racheal, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
According to police, the victims allegedly paid between Shs5 million and Shs10 million each, depending on the type of job and the country where they were seeking employment.
The arrest marks a significant development in a case involving hundreds of alleged victims who claim to have paid substantial sums of money in pursuit of jobs abroad.
Police said Asiimwe is currently in custody as investigations continue and will be produced before court in accordance with the law.
The case highlights the risks faced by Ugandans seeking employment abroad, particularly where recruitment agents promise lucrative jobs in foreign countries in exchange for large upfront payments.
Police urged members of the public to verify the legitimacy and licensing status of labour recruitment companies and agents before making payments or entering into recruitment arrangements.
“Members of the public with relevant information regarding this case are encouraged to report to the nearest police station,” Kawala said.
Authorities have increasingly warned prospective migrant workers to conduct due diligence on recruitment agencies and to be cautious of individuals who demand large sums of money while promising overseas employment.
The investigation will now seek to establish the full extent of the alleged recruitment operation, the number of people affected and how much money was allegedly collected.
The suspect remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
